Sharana Literature Study and Research Field

Dr. B.C. Jawali

Dr. B.C. Jawali was born in Havanagi, in the Hanagal taluk of the present-day Haveri district, which was part of the former Dharwad district. His birthdate is March 10, 1931. His upbringing was deeply rooted in cultural values and traditions.

He received his secondary education at the Raja Lakhamagouda Sardesai High School in Dharwad. In 1950, he excelled in the S.S.C. examination in the Mumbai region, followed by obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree with distinction from J.S.S. College in Dharwad in 1955. He scored 600 out of 600 in Kannada as his main language and 200 out of 200 in Sanskrit, achieving the highest honors in the college.

In 1952, he topped the Karnataka University’s Kannada M.A. examination. In 1971, he earned his Ph.D. from the same university for his dissertation titled “The Role of Women in Harishara Kavya.” He served as a professor in the Kannada department of Karnataka University for a total of 32 years, retiring as a distinguished academic.

Dr. B.C. Jawali also served as Assistant Directors at the Textbook Directorate. He was the President of the Literature Committee of the Dharwad Lingayat Development Institute and the Executive Director of the Prof. Sam. Shi. Bhushanur Math Foundation for many years after his retirement. He was also a member of several literary and cultural organizations.

Known for his extensive research and scholarly contributions, Dr. B.C. Jawali has authored numerous articles and essays, particularly focusing on the study of ancient poetry. His keen interest in the works of Harishara Kavi and his contributions to Kannada literature are noteworthy. He has edited and published several significant literary works and anthologies.

Recognized for his scholarly achievements and dedicated service, Dr. B.C. Jawali has received numerous awards and honors. He is known for his humility and congeniality.

His notable contributions to the field of Sharana literature and research have been acknowledged by the Akhila Bharata Sharana Sahitya Parishat, which conferred upon him the prestigious “Ramana Sharana” award in 2012, in collaboration with the Ramanashree Foundation, as a token of appreciation.

K.C. Shivappa has achieved immense success in various fields such as literature, culture, administration, social service, and book publishing. Originally from Kagalavadi in Chamarajanagar taluk, they graduated from Mysore University and then delved into the field of publishing. Initially serving as the Director of Publications at the Central Research Institute in Madras, and later as the Director of the Broadcasting Department at Bangalore University, they oversaw the printing and publishing of over 500 books. Additionally, they served as the Controller of Examinations at the University for some time.

K.C. Shivappa has also made significant contributions as the Director of the Department of Kannada and Culture in the Karnataka government. Their visionary initiatives have left a lasting impact, including organizing numerous cultural events at the state and national levels. They have been instrumental in the publication of hundreds of books on Kannada culture. Their tenure as the Chief Editor of publications like ‘Prasad,’ ‘Sharanapatha,’ and ‘Jashira’ has been remarkably successful.

Their dedication to public service extends beyond their professional roles. Through the Rotary Club of Bangalore South, they have served as President and have chaired various committees for two decades. They have also been associated with numerous projects as the Director of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in Bangalore.

In the literary realm, K.C. Shivappa is known for their poetry collections, essays, stories, translations, and edited works. Their recent work, “Muddu Rama Manasu,” has received widespread acclaim. Their poetic compositions and essays, published in various magazines and newspapers, have earned them recognition and accolades.

Their contributions to literature are marked by their unique style and profound insights. Their poetic verses, especially in the genre of Vachana literature, reflect depth, beauty, and spiritual essence. Their works, like ‘Mudduram,’ are cherished by readers.

K.C. Shivappa’s literary prowess, scholarly achievements, rich experiences, and practical wisdom have earned them immense respect. Their distinguished personality and achievements were honored by the Akhila Bharata Sharana Sahitya Parishat and Ramanashree Foundation in 2012 with the prestigious ‘Ramanashree Sharana’ award.

Dr. Sarvamangala Shankar

Dr. Sarvamangala Shankar was born on March 30, 195 in the historic city of Srirangapatna, Karnataka, to music enthusiasts Sri S.C. Rajashekar and Smt. Parvatamma. With immense passion for music since childhood, Sarvamangala began learning Karnataka music at the age of eight. She received initial training from Vidwan Rangappa and Vidushi Shantakumari, and later advanced her knowledge under eminent scholars like Prof. Balarai E. Seshagiri Achar, B. Krishnappa, Anoor S. Ramakrishna, R.K. Srikantan, and Gaurikuppaswamy.

She earned her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Mysore, Master of Music degree from Bangalore University, and obtained M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees for her thesis titled “Swaravachanagalu: Ondu Sangitathmaka Adhyayana” (Sonic Verses: A Musical Study).

As accomplished artists in the field of music, Dr. Sarvamangala Shankar has contributed significantly to radio and television programs, directed and composed various musical compositions such as “Basava-Ballidda Bhakti”, “Vachanakarara Koduge” (Contribution of Vachana Poets to Music), “Vairagya Nidhi Akka Mahadevi”, and “Vishwadharmi Basavanna”. She has also served as an adjudicator for All India Radio’s music division and as a guest lecturer in the music department of Bangalore University.

Her dedication to music education and cultural institutions has led to the establishment of a special library focusing on Lingayatism, religion, philosophy, and culture, housing over 12,000 works. Recognizing her contributions, she was honored with the prestigious “Uttama Khasagi Granthalaya Seva Puraskara” by the Karnataka government’s Public Libraries Department.

Dr. Sarvamangala Shankar’s vision for the future includes digitization of comprehensive works, archival documentation, and publication of rare ancient texts, along with plans for a research center for Lingayatism in collaboration with Akhila Bharata Sharana Sahitya Parishat and Ramanashree Pratishtana.

The Lingayat Research Center Library continues to strive for a brighter future with the support of esteemed organizations, aiming to be a beacon of knowledge and research in the field of Lingayatism.
